Artist Statement:
"While working with Sundog Stained Glass Studio, I had the opportunity to be part of a two person team in the fabrication of a glass window series by the artist and author Frederick Franck. His free style painting and spiritual approach to life had an effect on how I wanted to express my work in glass. I began to see the glass more as a canvas where I could loosen up the technique and push the painting process with multiple layers and firings. There is an unpredictability in this approach that keeps things interesting with a painting method that dates back to the 12th century. I work with conventional leaded glass construction materials but do not limit myself to them. Unconventional materials, such as, found glass and metals have been leaded into a piece, sometimes expanding on it’s two dimensionality. Preliminary design ideas are often depicted in different mediums, such as color pencil, watercolors, and oil paint. These design painted ideas aren’t always built into glass pieces but rather stand on their own merit in being finished pieces. For me, creating images is more than making pleasing pictures. Common subjects become symbols of my understanding of life, depicting the beauty, the strengths, and the vulnerable."
